Q&A with Khalid

ES: Who are your artistic influences?
K: Not sure, there are many, Allah is the most important and influential One that springs to mind. Music: Jon Lucien, Derrick May, Weather Report; film: Sidney Lumet; word: Gill Scott Heron and life: Sheikh Aley Sulaiman.

ES: What have you learnt from filmmakers who have come before you?
K: That if the boundaries are adhered to, then solid work and solid stories can be told, that have meaning and can be understood by many. If one paints outside the lines then exceptional and heart-turning works are produced that influence and change lives. Above all, the process is about allowing, allowing the collaborative process to define itself based on who brings what to the table.

ES: What do you hope to achieve each time you set out to make a film?
K: Collaboration, coherence and consciousness.

ES: What inspired you to make The Killing of Imam Haron?
K: The cover of the book written about Imam Haron called “The Killing of the Imam” and Imam Abdullah Haron himself.

ES: If there’s one boundary or misconception you could knock down about filmmaking or being a filmmaker, what would it be?
K: T
here is a misconception that it is a glamorous lifestyle and that the director does everything.
